Panelists 2023

The title of this year’s panel is “How to succeed in grad school” . Are you considering graduate school, either a Masters or a PhD? Have you already started your graduate degree and want to know how to make the best of this critical phase of your career? Come ask our panel of experts and get the answers you need.

Greg Bell

Dr. Greg Bell received his Ph.D. in 2002 from the University of Florida under the direction of Alexander Dranishnikov. He was a VIGRE postdoc at Penn State and joined the UNCG faculty in 2005. His research studies coarse geometry, geometric topology, and geometric group theory. From 2017 he served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School. In Spring of 2023 Dr. Bell became the Dean of the Graduate School at UNCG.

Kevin McGoff

Dr. Kevin McGoff received his Ph.D in 2011 from University of Maryland College Park under the supervision of Mike Boyle and worked at Duke University as a Visiting Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2015. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNC Charlotte. His research interests include ergodic theory and dynamical systems, probability theory, statistical inference for dynamical systems, and systems biology. His work has been funded by, among others, an NSF CAREER award.

Kalani Thalagoda

Dr. Kalani Thalagoda earned her Ph.D in computational mathematics in 2023 from the University of North Carolina Greensboro under the supervision of Dan Yasaki. She is now a Postdoc Fellow at Tulane University working with Olivia Beckwith. Her broad research interest is in computational number theory. Her thesis is on the computational aspects of Bianchi modular forms. Apart from doing math, she loves spending time outdoors, reading and spending time with her friends.
