REU project in mathematical biology.

Professors Jan (Rychtar) and Jonathan (Rowell) successfully completed the third summer of the NSF funded REU project in mathematical biology. This summer, Xiaoli (Gao) and Igor (Erovenko) also joined the faculty mentoring team and directed research projects. For ten weeks in 2016 (mid-May to the end of July), Jan, Jonathan, Xiaoli, Igor and Olav Rueppell (from Biology) worked with nine undergraduate students that came from UNC, UNCG, University of Portland, Wake Forest University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Western Carolina University, Western State Colorado University, and Winston Salem State University. The students were split into 4 groups and each group worked a math biology research project lead by two mentors. The projects focused on cholera prevention, modelling cancer, understanding genome of honey bees, and detection of genes anomalies.
