In this talk I will present a new mathematics-centered data science curriculum developed at Purdue. The curriculum consists of one-credit “add-on” laboratories associated to existing courses in the undergraduate math curriculum. In these labs, students apply the tools and concepts they learn in the companion math course while learning to program in Python and getting experience acquiring data with Arduino sensors and microprocessors. The labs are taught by undergraduate instructors, and the material required fits in a small suitcase. Our curriculum provides a lean and cost/time efficient way for students to acquire a practical data science expertise while learning to appreciate the importance of mathematics in applications.
