Are you considering applying for a position within our program? Here is a little bit more information about what we expect of our student participants, what we hope you will get out of the program and the minimal requirements for applying.

What are the minimum qualifications?

Students applying for the program should

Be a freshmen, sophomore, junior, or a senior UNCG student
Maintained a 3.0 GPA in ther biology and mathematical and statistical courses
Have completed at least TWO of the following
- Mat 292
- one semester of basic statistics (Sta 290 or Sta 271)
- one semester of introductory biology (Bio 111/Bio 112)

Note: especially the third requirement is not set in stone, you may be still selected provided you will complete the course work as soon as possible.

What do we expect of our participants?

During the semester, you will

On average, spend between 6-8 hours per week on research
Attend a weekly research seminar
Actively participate at regular group research meetings to discuss related articles, brainstorm, discuss problems, propose solutions and work toward moving the research forward
Write a paper about your research
Present (both in written and oral form) to the group about your own research project
Present your research at regional/national meetings
Be part of an outreach program to promote math and biology at high-school

During the summer, you will

Work full time on your research for 8-10 weeks
Actively participate at regular group research meetings to discuss related articles, brainstorm, discuss problems, propose solutions and work toward moving the research forward
Write a paper about your research
Attend workshops on a variety of topics iincluding bioethics, applying to graduate school, working in groups
Tour local regional biology and mathematical related businesses

What will I get for participating?

You will have the opportunity to:

Earn 1000 stipend in Spring and a 3000 stipend for the summer
Participate in an experience that will give you leg up on your peers when applying for a job and/or graduate school
Enhance your writing, critical thinking and problem solving skills
Network with individuals in industry and with faculty members at other institutions
Present the results of your research to your peers both on and off campus
Get to know UNCG faculty members and other students very well as part of a research community

You have to fill the application form on-line and submit two letters of reference to Dr. Jan Rychtar. Click here for more detail.
