The Department successfully completed a fourth summer of an NSF-funded REU Site in Mathematical Biology. This was the first summer of the second NSF grant for the REU Site (Lead Principal Investigator, Jan Rychtář; Principal Investigator, Olav Rueppell; and Senior Personnel, Igor ErovenkoXiaoli GaoDavid RemingtonJonathan Rowell, and Filip Saidak). For nine weeks in 2017 (mid-May till the end of July), Igor, Filip, Olav (from Biology), and Hyunju Oh (Bennett College) worked with ten undergraduate students who came from Bennett College, Bowdoin College, Northern Michigan University, Regis University, University of Minnesota, UNCG, and Whitworth University. The students were split into four groups to work on research projects in mathematical biology. The 2017 projects focused on voluntary vaccination policies to eradicate Ebola, optimal vaccination strategies to reduce endemic levels of meningitis in Africa, optimal vaccination strategies to combat S. Typhi transmission in South Asia, and social interaction of bees and IAPV transmission. Congratulations to all the research mentors!
