Calculus Transition
In fall 2021 we started rolling out a new calculus sequence. In both the old and the new sequences the same material is taught, but the 12 credit hours of material is distributed over four courses in the old sequence and over three courses in the new sequence.
The old calculus sequence consists of these four courses:
- MAT 191 Calculus I (3 hours): Differential calculus
- MAT 292 Calculus II (3 hours): Integral calculus
- MAT 293 Calculus III (3 hours): Sequences and series, preparation for vector calculus
- MAT 394 Calculus IV (3 hours): Vector calculus
The new calculus sequence consists of these three courses:
- MAT 196 Calculus A (4 hours): Differential calculus, introduction to integral calculus
- MAT 296 Calculus B (4 hours): Integral calculus, sequences and series
- MAT 396 Calculus C (4 hours): Vector calculus
Calculus I to B transition
In fall 2021 we offered MAT 292 Calculus II for the last time. Because MAT 191 Calculus I is a 3 hour course and MAT 196 Calculus A is a 4 hour course this leaves a gap of one hour worth of calculus material between MAT 191 Calculus I and MAT 296 Calculus B.
Students with a grade of C or better in MAT 191 Calculus I or with MAT 191 Calculus I transfer credit may close this one our gap by taking the Calculus I to B Transition Test.
Special accommodations are in place for students with 4 hours of MAT 191 Calculus I transfer credit and for those who took MAT 292 Calculus II but did not succeed in this course.
4 hours of Calculus I Transfer Credit
If you have transfer credit for MAT 191 Calculus I and you were given four hours of transfer credit, contact the Mathematics and Statistics Department office (see the bottom of this page for contact information) and they will put in an override for you. You will need to provide proof of the transfer credit, for example in the form of a copy of a transcript or your DegreeWorks worksheet.
Transition to Calculus B from unsuccessful Calculus II
For students who get a C- or worse or drop MAT 292 Calculus II the following apply:
- Students who got 4 hours of MAT 191 Calculus I transfer credit may register for MAT 296 Calculus B
- Students who get a C- or D+ or D or D- in MAT 292 Calculus II may register for MAT 296 Calculus B
- Students who performed decently for the first third of MAT 292 Calculus II (but dropped or failed the course) will be let into MAT 296 Calculus B with an override. Their MAT 292 teacher makes the decision. Students need to contact their MAT 292 teacher if this option could apply to them.
- Other students will need to pass the Calculus I to B Transition Test.
Other Calculus transitions
For the other calculus courses we have allowed for the transition by allowing appropriate prerequisites. The number of courses that students have to take in the calculus sequence does not increase but they might have to take one or two more hours of calculus. We are offering MAT 293 Calculus III for the last time in spring 2022.
- MAT 292 Calculus II is a prerequisite of MAT 296 Calculus B
- MAT 293 Calculus III is a prerequisite of MAT 396 Calculus C
Calculus I to B Transition Test
If you have credit for MAT 191 Calculus I and pass the Calculus I to B Transition Test you have closed the gap and may register for MAT 296 Calculus B.
To take the test go to the office of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at UNCG in room 116 in the Petty Building and ask for the Calculus I to B Transition Test.
The Mathematics and Statistics office in Petty 116 is open from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays. If you want to make sure it is open when you want to take the test use the contact information on the bottom of this page.
You will be
- given a problem sheet
- asked to leave everything except for pencil and eraser in the math office
- assigned a table to work on
You have one hour to complete the test. You can take the test up to three times (but only once each week). When the test is graded you will be notified of your score (pass or fail) by email. If you pass an override that lets you take MAT 296 Calculus B will be entered for the upcoming semester.
If you fail the Calculus I to B Transition Test three times you should enroll in MAT 196 Calculus A.

Review Problems
This set of review questions covers the material that is on the transition test.
Familiarize yourself with the material by reading the book or by watching the videos below. Try to solve the problems. Go back to the book or videos or other material to figure out how to solve the remaining problems. Do this until you have a solution for each problem. Compare your solutions to the provided solutions. Learn from your mistakes.
