Paths to MAT 191 Calculus I
MAT 191 Calculus is a 3 credit Calculus course required for most STEM majors. There are several paths to Calculus I credit, which we describe below.
AP Calculus AB exam score of 3 or higher earns credit for MAT 191 Calculus I.
Action: Take MAT 292 Calculus II, if desired.
Comments: If you have taken the AP Calculus exam but do not have your score yet, you should register for MAT 181 and MAT 191. You will be able to modify your schedule, if necessary, once you have your exam score.
AP Calculus AB exam score of 2 satisfies prerequisite for MAT 191 Calculus I.
Action: Get prerequisite override (since AP scores are not checked by the Registrar), and register for MAT 191 Calculus I.
Comments: If you feel shaky about your preparation, register to take the MAT 181 support course concurrently. If you have taken the AP Calculus exam but do not have your score yet, you should register for MAT 181 and MAT 191. You will be able to modify your schedule, if necessary, once you have your exam score.
Math Placement Test (MPT) score of 80% or higher.
Action: Get prerequisite override (since MPT scores are not checked by the Registrar), and register for MAT 191 Calculus I.
Comments: If you feel shaky about your preparation, register to take the MAT 181 support course concurrently.
Math Placement Test (MPT) score of 60% to 79%.
 Action: Choose between the following.
Get prerequisite override (since MPT scores are not checked by the Registrar), and register for MAT 190 Precalculus. Earn C or better to get into MAT 191 Calculus I the following semester.
Register for MAT 191 Calculus I together with the MAT 181 support course.
Comments: If you have taken Precalculus or Calculus before (in high school or college) and can afford 6 credit hours and associated workload to dedicate to mathematics this semester, you should take MAT 191 Calculus I with the MAT 181 support course. Otherwise, take MAT 190 Precalculus. If you feel shaky about your preparation after MAT 190 Precalculus, register to take the MAT 181 support course concurrently with MAT 191 Calculus I.
Math Placement Test (MPT) score below 60%.
 Action: Choose between the following.
Register for MAT 150 Precalculus I. This is the first semester of a two semester Precalculus sequence that will prepare you for Calculus. Earn a C or better in MAT 150 Precalculus I and the sequel MAT 151 Precalculus II to get into MAT 191 Calculus I the following year.
Register for MAT 191 Calculus I together with the MAT 181 support course.
Comments: You should only choose the second option if all of the following apply.
You can afford 6 credit hours and associated workload to dedicate to mathematics this semester.
You have seen algebra and trigonometry before and feel that with additional support during the semester, you can fill in the missing gaps in prerequisite knowledge.

Action: Follow Action Plan and Comments for MPT below 60%, described above. Take Math Placement Test and adjust schedule afterward, if necessary.
